Red Flowers
Drawing with oil bar on paper

2011

Janssen took inspiration for 'Red Flowers' from a homophobic incident she witnessed on the streets of Sau Paulo: a transvestite’s skimpy white dress was covered with what appeared to be red flowers, but when the transvestite staggered closer, she realised with a shock that they were bloodstains from the assault. The artist spent days drawing and reflecting on the complex image of the transvestites. The fact that the victim kept on fighting like a girl, and didn’t stand up and ‘fight like a man’ kept hunting the artist. In her eyes they were some kind of überwomen; an image clearly not shared by everybody.
