Karin Janssen Project Space archive

Karin Janssen Project Space is an independent exhibition space, founded in 2011 in London, run and programmed by Dutch artist Karin Janssen.  In 2015 Janssen relocated to Shanghai to focus on her own art practice, and the project space has since been closed.

Karin Janssen Project Space provided a platform for international emerging and established artists. In recent years Karin had developed a curatorial practice that was closely linked to her practice as an artist.

VANITAS
3 - 20 July 2014
Tessa Farmer, Julian Farrar, Chiho Iwase, Karin Janssen, Suzanne Moxhay

Relishing in the gloomy, decadent beauty of decay, this exhibition brings together five international artists with very individual approaches to the Vanitas theme. The Vanitas tradition became popular in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, featuring dramatic still life paintings symbolising the transitory nature of earthly pleasures. “Mortal life is fleeting”, they declared, “whereas the afterlife is never-ending.” The artists in this show explore the subject in a contemporary context, engaging the viewer with highly expressive and accomplished work. Click here to read and see more >>

HUNG, DRAWN AND ALTERED: DRAWN IN
4th - 15th October 2011

Jools Johnson, Gaia Persico, Patric Sandri, Elisa Sighicelli, Abbi Torrance
Curated by Baylors & Diamond

Hung, Drawn and Altered: Drawn In looks at the practice of drawing in its broadest application, from pencil drawings to sculpture and video, while 'drawing the viewer in', as the title suggests, to interrogate what might be interpreted as 'drawing'. Rather than defining the process of drawing, Hung, Drawn and Altered: Drawn In investigates this notion through the practices of five contemporary artists.

WELL SONIC & WELL SECRET
10 May - 8 July 2011
Artist in residence Anna Lopez

During her residency Lopez stimulated the local public to give their personal - and sometimes subconscious - contributions to create a new body of work. The aim of the residency was to investigate possible ways of dialogue and engagement between the newly opened art space and the established local community. Lopez played with residents, provoking them to stop and see their street and its characters in a different way.
