Hung, Drawn and Altered: Drawn In looks at the practice of drawing in its broadest application, from pencil drawings to sculpture and video, while 'drawing the viewer in', as the title suggests, to interrogate what might be interpreted as 'drawing'. Rather than defining the process of drawing, Hung, Drawn and Altered: Drawn In investigates this notion through the practices of five contemporary artists.
In Elisa Sighicelli's Nocturne (Trajectories) lights contrasting with a black background delineate the vessels on which they sit and travel across the screen forming 'trajectories of lights'; while Jools Johnson's God Lives in Details uses the structure of object pieces to evoke architectural design. In both of these, the 'drawing' is implied rather than formally employed. In Abbi Torrance's work the figurative yet geometric formations drawn in pencil echo the abstract landscapes of social networks; Patric Sandri's Locations of Disorientation uses meticulous mark-making to entice and dupe the viewer in equal measure; and in Gaia Persico's Lonely Planet we travel the world through drawings of selected details glimpsed through hotel windows, as though traversing a mutating landscape of ideas, which question our common cultural consciousness of place.
'Drawn In' is part of Hung, Drawn and Altered, a three-part exhibition program which will showcase work by international contemporary artists at three different venues across London. Each exhibition takes on an aspect of the title and will either open in conjunction with First Thursdays in East London or the Last Fridays in South London (SLAM). Baylors & Diamond is a curatorial partnership between two artists Victoria Ahrens and Giuseppina Esposito. Its main objective is to curate exhibitions showcasing work by internationally based artists.
